I came for the ranch dressing at MILDREDS (Soho)

I love Mildreds (45 Lexington Street, Soho). I tried their incredible vegan mushroom and ale pie last year for the first time and I just fell in love with their food. The place seems to be the go-to recommendation for foodies in London and it’s not hard to see why. Today I wandered in off the rain soaked streets of Soho and realised every vegetarian in London probably had the same idea. It was busy.

The kind of busy that might put me off if I hadn’t been dreaming of coming back here for the past half year.

I wasn’t going to get a starter folks! I wasn’t even going to go for lunch until later, but the rain was getting heavier and heavier outside and I was pretty sure my jacket wasn’t waterproof. Buffalo tofu crumbed and fried with buffalo sauce was calling my name. Vegan ranch dressing was whispering sweet nothings in my ear. I couldn’t resist.

I decided to go the whole comfort food route with fennel and sun blushed tomato sausages, garlic & spring onion mash, and an onion cider gravy. Oh and kale. I have such a weakness for kale. I’m very fussy about my veggie sausages; they’re often too chewy and dry, or overseasoned with herbs and spices to mimic the taste of meat sausages. These were perfect.

So I didn’t care that I was sat elbow to elbow with other diners, and I almost forgot it was still raining outside. The food at Mildreds is worth going outside on a grey London afternoon for.
